Sex Offenders and the Church

Our Board of Directors

New Name Ministries is governed by a Board of Directors, which provides us with a solid basis for our various ministries and services.

The 2014 Board of Directors is shown below, along with the year that they started serving on the Board.

John Leonardson - Board President

Year Joined: 2004

In prison ministry since 1980, Rev. John Leonardson has worked inside many prisons, run three prison ministries and an aftercare center, and written three technical manuals on various aspects of reentry. John, through his ministry, MentorCare, loves to work with churches or aftercare centers to help them establish or improve their ministry. He has also traveled to several countries to train local Christians to work in prison ministry. He believes the key issue facing our criminal justice system is re-entry. John specializes in teaching, mentor training, understanding the criminal mind, ministry analysis, fundraising, and literature development.

John carries a deep sense of calling to this ministry and served as an elder in Colleyville Christian Fellowship. He has been married to Marian since 1971 and they have three daughters.

Jon R Cordeiro

Founder and National Director

Pastor Jon is a graduate of Victory Bible Training School and former Graduate Peer Consultant for Supervised Community Treatment of Portland, Maine. His former volunteer activities have included being a volunteer chaplain at the Maine Correctional Center through the Gideons and long-term involvement with the Sexual Violence Collaborative of Southern Maine. Jon is ordained in the State of Texas and provides education and consultation on residential re-entry for sex offenders and “Sex Offender Sense” educational presentations for churches, national organizations, and businesses regarding policies and procedures for sex offenders in the community.
Jon and Cynthia, his bride, moved from Maine in 2004 to Texas and have been married for 24 years. They have a grown married daughter, one grandson, as well as numerous spiritual sons and daughters.

Cynthia L. Cordeiro - Board Secretary

Year Joined: 2004

An RN in emergency medicine for 40 years, Cynthia does the medical intake on each new arrival, establishes a medical liaison for that man with the medical community for civilian or veteran status health services. While maintaining a file on each man for maintenance health issues, she is available for triage of acute evaluations and referral for specialty concerns. With her Bachelors in Psychology and a Court Appointed Safeguard, she also is involved in the screening of applicants and on-going identification of ‘red flag’ concerns.
